ABSTRACT

This chapter distinguishes between working groups and organisations in the title because sometimes the working group is the whole organisation. It utilizes the fundamentals of inter-professional systems consultation for the time being in order to illustrate its essentials. The chapter shows how the consultative strategies between professional workers can be adapted for direct work with clients and patients. It also utilizes examples of episodes in consultative work to illustrate some basic rules and guidelines. The examples are a reminder that systems consultation with an organisation may be on a single occasion, though further meetings with a slightly different agenda may be sought later. Alternatively, an organisation may request regular sessions with an outside consultant. Systems consultation provides a unique and the author think interesting opportunity to recognise that the human synapses of organisations are capable of thought, feeling and discrimination, and capable of seeing in a wider perspective what they and the organisation are doing.
