ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a discussion on relating to sexual behaviour in men. It begins with questions about where men find their sexual opportunities and considers their sexual risk-taking behaviour. The chapter focuses on condoms and their use to illustrate how some men perceive their sexual roles, rules and activities. Sexual behaviour in men tends to be viewed in terms of hegemonic masculinity traits. Sex is seen as being powerful, natural and driven. Age plays a significant role in the development of sexual behaviour in both males and females. From puberty onwards, boys tend to be more sexually motivated, whereas girls tend to seek emotional connections to sexual contacts. Sexual behaviour among men is a complex area that is little understood despite advances being made among academic authors. Condoms can provide an effective barrier to sexual infection and unintended pregnancy. It is well documented that their use is erratic at best and non-existent at worst.
