ABSTRACT

Margarita's aim was to live until she was a hundred because she had so much to do. She wanted to outlive her mother who had reached 96.Margarita was diagnosed with carcinoma of the left breast in 1999 at the age of 76. The tumour was oestrogen and progesterone positive and so she was treated with Tamoxifen to which she had a good response but Margarita requested to discontinue this treatment as she felt that it was making her forgetful. Her past medical history is relevant in that she had a major road traffic accident in her 20s when she was run over by a 10 ton lorry resulting in a fractured pelvis and crushed legs. She was in plaster for 6 months and in hospital for 1 year. Margarita had been on Fluconazole for 2 weeks because of oral candida, so this was changed to Itraconazole solution. However as her condition deteriorated she became unable to take any oral medications.
