ABSTRACT
This chapter starts with Kenyan villagers improving their health in the 1970s and concludes with lessons about community health being taken from Africa to New York.
The chapter describes a continuum between what citizens do for themselves, what carers do and what health workers do. It reviews the global health workforce crisis and the new strategies that are being developed to address it, including new emphasis on job re-design and transformative professional education.
