Different Kinds of Data

One of the factors that determine what statistical tests you can use is the kind of data that you have. In some areas of geography you may be measuring something with quite a high degree of precision, so that your data are numbers with perhaps a couple of decimal places, whereas in others you may just be counting the numbers that fall into certain categories, and sometimes those categories have a logical order and sometimes they do not (Table 3.1). Being aware of the kinds of data that you can collect, or just recognising the kind of data that you have, is a critical skill if you want to use statistical tests.
