People consult physicians during periods of stress such as bereavement. Recognizing the clinical presentation and the stage of grief is necessary. Establishing a rapport, acknowledging distress, allowing ventilation, eliciting the patient’s perspectives, providing support, excluding medical disease, educating the patient and family about the issues involved, prescribing medication, if necessary, discussing stress, and helping the patient cope are crucial.
