ABSTRACT

Provide immediate cardioprotection to prevent cardiac arrest: (i) Give 10% calcium chloride 10 mL i.v. over 2-5 min, repeated

until the ECG and cardiac output normalize (a) this does not lower the potassium level, but antagonizes the

deleterious effects of hyperkalaemia on the myocardium, reducing the risk of ventricular fibrillation (onset of protection in 1-3 min).
