ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses children's and youth participation from the perspective of upbringing and development and discusses some of the views of developmental psychologists. It looks at the theoretical arguments and concrete initiatives that have been taken in the field of pedagogy to promote the active commitment and participation of children. The chapter considers the role of children's participation in the practical situation of raising children in the family. It aims to look at the theories, experiments and research data that seem relevant to this subject. The chapter briefly sketches the history of developmental psychology: how do various well-known theorists describe the relations between the individual development of children and the development of society? It explains that, at the beginning of this century, social educationalists posited the idea of 'community education' as opposed to an individual educational theory inspired by the Enlightenment thinkers.
