ABSTRACT

The term 'psychosexual medicine' is used by different people to describe different ways of working, each of which may have a different emphasis. Psychosexual medicine has tried to distance itself from counselling because of the very different expectations and setting for doctors and their patients compared with those for counsellors and their clients. The chapter also presents an overview of this book. The book is concerned with the search for some truths between the body and the mind. It looks at two further skills that can be used to provide understanding and relief for at least some of those people in distress. The book also looks at ideas about the structure of the personality, and it will become clear that many of the basic facts of our sexuality are determined early in life.
