ABSTRACT

The PCs going into peoples homes are not just going to sit on a desk and be decorative. The purchase of computers at this level will have a major impact on the capacity for home working, home shopping and home education. Sales of PCs have soared by 55% in the UK. Research by Wharton Information Systems shows sales zoomed to £3.1 billion, an increase of 55% on 1993. Hardware manufacturers spent £67 million on advertising, with £ 14 million spent in December 1993 alone. The figures include 'churning', the turnover of replacement software, people moving to a higher specification, upgrades and the like. The number of people planting a PC on their desk. Few businesses can exist without computers, but they are also upgraded, so there is more churning.
