ABSTRACT

Sexual health forms an important component of the overall health of an individual in addition to physical and mental health. While sexual emergencies constitute only a small percentage of the emergencies in any casualty department, these are the emergencies that may need a bit of extra attention from medical multidisciplinary teams. In a real sexual emergency, a psychiatrist may form part of a multidisciplinary team and play a crucial role in helping the patient. Priapism refers to a persistent and painful penile erection not associated with sexual stimulation and unrelieved by ejaculation. The foreign bodies may have been inserted into the vagina by the person herself for sexual gratification or they may have been inserted as part of a sexual assault. A psychiatrist plays a central role in cases of sexual assault by helping the victim deal with feelings of shock, anger, or denial in the acute stage immediately after the assault.
