ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we will look in more detail at the general theory of forces. This theory has been extremely successful in providing a mathematical model for fundamental forces and has had a profound influence on the way that we think about the origin of the universe. The price has been the difficulty in extracting from it a clear physical picture of what is happening. At the subatomic level, forces are not simply ‘pushes and pulls’.
