ABSTRACT

Malingering is dened in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM-5) as “the intentional production of false or grossly exaggerated physical or psychological symptoms, motivated by external incentives such as avoiding military duty, avoiding work, obtaining nancial compensation, evading criminal prosecution, or obtaining drugs” (American Psychiatric Association [APA] 2013, 726). In contrast, factitious disorders involve the intentional production of false symptoms in the absence of obvious external rewards. Both disorders require a deceitful state of mind. Feigning is the deliberate fabrication or gross exaggeration of symptoms without any assumptions about its goals.
