ABSTRACT

Mrs Coleman, a 55-year-old woman had a routine mammogram (Figure 25.1a) as part of the breast cancer screening programme.

Answer 1 Figure 25.1a shows a small cluster of microcalcification. It is suspicious but not sufficiently abnormal to be confident that it represents a malignant lesion. In contrast, Figure 25.1b shows benign calcifications, the thin arrow shows calcification within a blood vessel wall and the thick arrow shows coarse calcification, probably as a result of degenerative changes within the stroma.
