ABSTRACT

Cough Cats rarely cough with cardiac disease, although it is reported with heartworm infection. However, cough is the most common complaint in dogs with cardiac disease. It is important to differentiate cough due to cardiac disease from that due to respiratory causes. A high-pitched or honking cough is more commonly associated with tracheobronchial collapse, whereas dogs with heart disease will tend to have an intermittent, harsh, low pitched cough, which may be more prominent at night. Cough can be more specific of congestive heart failure (CHF) in large breed dogs than in small breeds.
