ABSTRACT

You are asked to see a 62-year-old man on the ward by the urologists. Since he underwent an uncomplicated transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) the previous day, he has had continuous haematuria. On further questioning, he reports that he bled profusely after a tonsillectomy in his 20s and required a blood transfusion. At school, he was a promising footballer but had to give up because he would develop haematomas after playing. Last year, he underwent a tooth extraction and had to return to the dentist after 2 days because of ongoing bleeding. This settled after the dentist restitched the wound.
