ABSTRACT

Adamson’s point is a good one, because γ appears in Equation 6.1 as a thermodynamic work term, surface energy seems to be the less misleading term.* Here, it is assumed that surface energy and surface tension refer to the same excess energy at surfaces and both terms will be used depending on what is being discussed. For example, treating surface energy as a surface tension-as a force per unit length-permits the simple development of several useful relations between the energies of different surfaces and their microstructural effects more easily than with surface energies and surface areas.
