ABSTRACT

In many complex console-level digital games, objectives can be global or local. Rules are the structure inside of which the game exists. A reward system is a way to generate incentive, which in turn drives the player to want to return to the game and play again. Anything in a game that compels the user to play again can be considered a reward system, but there are seven specific systems that the author has identified in gameplay: collection, achievement, catharsis, competition, role-playing, discovery, and social interaction. Characters in games are not the same as characters in movies, for the reason that the player gets to either be them or interact with them, in conversation, battle, or otherwise. There are several kinds of obstacles that can be created as a part of the game and narrative experience. Environments in a game are vital to create the illusion of a specific time, place, and level of technology.
