ABSTRACT

One thing people have to carefully consider in exploring the art of storytelling is the person telling the story. Some formats of storytelling allow for input from the audience directly to the teller, and some are completely passive for the audience. A medium that separates the audience and the storyteller by time and space, without some level of interaction is considered a passive medium, and the effect of audience feedback and input is lost. The digital world has made us able to interact with the storyteller in multiple ways, often even in real time, while being far away in terms of physical distance. The idea of distance is important because it makes people feel very removed from the story, as in watching a television show like Law and Order, or they can feel like a participant in the story, like when people watch contest television shows where they can vote on the outcome, just like American Idol.
