ABSTRACT

This chapter looks over the reasons why stories are told and some basic examples of each. It identifies several categories and subcategories of targeted, purposeful storytelling that can be derived from a simple observation of culture. Behavior modification is changing what someone does based on storytelling. Like choosing something, buying something is a very similar methodology of targeted storytelling. Doing something based on targeted storytelling can also involve watching a television show, going to a website, giving money to charity, or pledging time to a volunteer service. The important thing here about generating a story to change public opinion is that it generally only moves in one direction, from bad to good. Most children's shows, which are exemplary in the use of storytelling and education, employ this method to some extent. Learning some things is far easier to do by interactive storytelling than it is by militant memorization, testing, and repetition.
