ABSTRACT

The modern forms of media can manipulate time and space in a way that makes them extremely powerful tools in telling stories and communication. This chapter explores those forms of media and how they can enhance, detract from, or replace the words of a story altogether. Images, video, animation, sound, and music are used prolifically in all forms of storytelling and communication and have been since the dawn of storyteller's species. The still image has gone through multitudes of technological innovations since those first cave paintings were created. An image, or a type of image, can be assessed based upon its portability, accessibility, subject matter, medium, and level of realism. These are the essential characteristics of an image as they pertain to visual communication tools. Each image can be broken down into components that characterize its primary attributes. Every image possesses the properties of subject, shading, color, and composition.
