ABSTRACT

Energy consumption and the environmental footprint are aspects of facility management that are rapidly gaining in importance as the impacts of global climate change have become a daily issue in the news. Facility managers have unique opportunities to improve the carbon footprint of their facilities by replacing old, inefficient technology with newer, more energy-efficient and self-sustaining technologies that meet government standards and use best practices. The environment in a facility is another important element in ensuring that people are not only comfortable but also safe. Facilities with security personnel can always send a security officer out to investigate what is occurring and to educate people about the impact of idling their vehicles for a long period of time. Facility managers may have to contend with having a daycare center in the building, where sickness can spread quite easily into the building population.
