ABSTRACT

Sub-optimal choices for which the drug choice mark will be reduced are:

• Another suitable beta adreno-receptor blocker (e.g. atenolol or metoprolol) – 3 marks awarded out of 4.

• Nifedipine – 3 marks awarded out of 4. • Hydralazine – 2 marks awarded out of 4. • Methyldopa – 1 mark awarded out of 4 (due to risk of postnatal depression). • ACEIs – 1 mark awarded out of 4 (certain ACEIs such as captopril and

enalapril should be avoided especially in pre-term infants due to the risk of profound neonatal hypotension unless careful blood pressure monitoring occurs).
