ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the differences between the insert bends and base flange approaches in sheet metal part design and considered some examples. The insert bends approach does not match the natural way that sheet metal design is carried out on the shop floor, whereas the base flange approach does. There are a number of manufacturing functions for which SolidWorks has tools for industrial applications. Some of these manufacturing functions include the mold design, sheet metal work, weldments and hinges. Sheet metal work is one of the several aspects of manufacturing process that requires specific attention. There are several methods that are involved in sheet metal work, among which are the following: bending, roll forming, deep drawing, bar drawing, tube drawing, wire drawing, and plastic drawing. Drawing can also be used to pull metal over a die to create a specific shape.
