ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Geneva wheel mechanism which has many applications for the product designers, tool engineers, and others who are involved in the design and manufacture of machinery, tooling, and mechanical devices and assemblies that are used in the industrial context. The watchmaker only put a limited number of slots in one of the rotating disks so that the system could only go through so many rotations. The Geneva wheel mechanism is a timing device that is used in many counting instruments and in other applications where an intermittent rotary motion is required. There are three types of Geneva wheels: External, Internal and Spherical. The Geneva mechanism is a simple mechanism that does not require any complicated design parts. However, the mechanism requires correct dimension and close tolerance for the correct engagements and disengagements. The parts of a Geneva mechanism are crank and Geneva wheel.
