‘Samira Khan’, called a nurse. The woman sitting opposite me jammed her feet back into her stilettos and followed the nurse into one of the adjoining consulting rooms. Just three days after I’d first discovered the lump in my breast, I was sitting in the smartly curtained and carpeted waiting room of Rushwood Hospital. I’d opted for the popular route of an initial outpatient consultation in a private hospital, with any necessary treatment taking place in our local National Health Service (NHS) hospital.
