ABSTRACT
THE PRACTICE HP I have had the good fortune to work in different environments and
I think that is quite useful because mental health and the care of mental health very much depends on postcode.
Currently, I work in a suburb in Wood Green in North London, which is in Haringey, a much more deprived part of London than Barnet where I worked before. It’s a much smaller practice, 3500 patients. They are mainly of the same ethnic background because, traditionally, the practice has been Greek speaking, started off by my father who was the fi rst Greek-speaking doctor in the area. A largely Greek Cypriot population who tended to come to a doctor who could speak to them in their native tongue. So the tradition is that we have got very much a Greek Cypriot community plus people who have moved into the area more recently. So the mixture has increased recently with a large Eastern European infl ux.
