ABSTRACT
This chapter is designed to be a resource for appraisers and appraiser support groups to encourage development in appraisal skills. It covers the following topics: ground rules for running small groups, preparation form for appraisers, giving feedback: the dos and the don’ts, appraisal scenarios for individual reflection or group discussion, and using a simulated appraiser for practising appraisal discussion skills – small group session and large group session. The chapter also covers exercises for appraiser support group discussion, reflective notes: a tool to reflect on difficult appraisals, form 4 assessment tool, personal development plan assessment tool, appraiser training day: reflective notes, appraiser training day: evaluation form, and websites and e-learning resources. Appraisal skills development is an essential part of delivery of high-quality appraisal. Many of the resources can be used as tools for personal reflection, but the value is likely to be obtained if they are used in a group environment where different appraisers will bring their viewpoints to discussions.
