ABSTRACT

The role of the appraiser is highly skilled, varied and interesting. The role of an appraiser is that of a skilled facilitator. The appraiser’s job is a privileged one that requires considerable preparation and time. Some functions will be provided by every appraiser and are core to each appraisal. Having described what an effective appraiser always is, it is useful to consider which responsibilities an appraiser should not generally take upon themselves. Every meeting, even when there are only two people involved, needs chairing. The skilful appraiser is able to act as an anchor for the appraisee’s development. By acting as a signpost, the appraiser can help appraisees to go away and do the work themselves, but the first step is made easier for them. The role of teacher does not sit comfortably within appraisal, and the balance should revert back to facilitating the appraisee’s reflection as soon as possible.
