ABSTRACT

Barbara began the session telling Nicola more about her treatment and how it was leaving her feeling. She also described what else she was doing to try and help her. The counsellor is describing the client's inner world as she senses it to be. The client's feeling of the unfairness of it all in particular is voiced. Barbara as though she was suddenly dropped into a great lake of pain, hurt, anguish, everywhere, like it was all there was. The tears continued to flow, her sobs became wails, horrible sounds and yet clearly so expressive of the pain and anguish that she was experiencing. The depth of pain and anguish that human beings have the capacity to experience may be known to the counsellor, from their work or their own experience. The person-centred counsellor need to have the emotional strength to sit with the depth of feeling that is brought into the therapeutic relationship.
