ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a counselling session provided to Billy. Billy was sitting in the counselling room. The session had already begun with him saying a little about his week. And yet as Billy spoke Chris just felt that the way he was speaking, it seemed as though each event had not been fully lived. Chris listened attentively to what Billy was saying. He seemed quite on edge as he was speaking. It seemed like it was really important for him to find that direction. So long as what is being suggested by the counsellor is genuinely felt, then it is less likely to be problematic in terms of its impact on the therapeutic relationship. Sometimes this kind of response can be the effect of a build-up within the counsellor. It can almost be a kind of release for the therapist, a making visible of what has become present within them.
