ABSTRACT

This chapter describes about a counselling session provided by Nicola to Barbara. Nicola sat in the counselling room at the doctor's surgery waiting for her client, Barbara, to arrive. This would be their eighth session. She had been seeing Barbara for a couple of months now, having been referred by her doctor for support and space to talk through difficulties she was having at home. The main issues had been related to Barbara's husband's lack of support for her, and her sons causing her stress as a result of their behaviour. One son was using drugs and had been in prison for acquisitive crimes, the other drank heavily and had been quite disruptive at times. Barbara had been feeling tired of everything, generally run down. It all seemed an effort. Barbara had been having some discomfort in her stomach, and back pain, though neither was particularly unusual.
