ABSTRACT

We do not know about death; it is yet a mystery to us. But there is much we need to learn about the journey of the dying – how those who are dying deal with the reality of their approaching death, what they fear and need, what are the hindrances to their healing, and where hope lies for them. According to Ronald Smith, "Fears collect in those areas of our lives where we are ignorant and have little clarity. And when our time to die comes upon us, all the fears we have accumulated come with it." Smith suggests that rather than remaining stalled on the same old fearful pathway, we can use our fears as signals that we need to heal those tortured places in our minds and hearts. The chapter provides us with the opportunity to practice our skills, and challenges us to explore our own assumptions and fears about death.
