ABSTRACT

For most people who are dying, particularly those who linger in the dying process, suffering may well be part of the journey. We would like to take their hand and lead them along the path, we understand that the search for meaning and hope cannot be imposed externally. Outside of what we bring personally to the relationship there are some other techniques and expressive activities that we can introduce to the dying person, such as music, writing, art, etc., that may help them to open emotional and spiritual space. This chapter explores several different activities and interventions, and relies on the creative nature of participants to design other techniques that might be helpful. A word of caution: any approach to relieving suffering must be co-created with the dying person, who must not feel coerced or uncomfortable in any way. Furthermore, the caregiver must remember that, for some individuals, suffering has spiritual meaning and purpose.
