ABSTRACT

Clinical performance of a doctor is how well they manage the patient pathway and the value they deliver to the patient, the clinical team, and the community in utilising their resources efficiently and effectively. The whole principle of performance management is to help the doctor outperform himself. The public and healthcare providers and legislation require performance management as part of the accreditation and credentialing process for the doctor in most countries. For any performance management system to be effective it has to have ownership of the group to be managed. Consumers play an important role in providing feedback in managing the performance of the doctors. Managers have a significant role to play in the performance of their doctors. Rodger et al. found that a significant relationship was observed between the management of healthcare information and quality performance. There are many drivers for performance in a clinical setting including the doctor, patient, regulatory bodies, stake-holders, and management.
