ABSTRACT

There is an identified need to improve the standards of service delivery for people with mental health–substance use problems, and ensure care provision is equitable and consistent at all points of access into, and through, services. To effectively meet the needs of people with mental health–substance use problems, services should aim to promote an ethos of care based in recovery and harm reduction approaches, and foster a ‘no wrong door’ whole systems integrated approach to care delivery. To achieve this, and successfully move towards a whole systems integrated approach to care, it is essential that all professionals (unqualified and qualified), have the knowledge and skills to provide effective, timely, evidence-based interventions, and support people in making informed decisions about their substance use. Moreover, professionals must feel confident and supported in providing these interventions.
