ABSTRACT

Jamie does not exhibit any manifestations of challenging behaviour outside the family home. Jamie is totally dependent on carers for all his physical needs. He can, when well, move himself on a sheepskin and lie against a beanbag, but has severe ataxia, especially when not well-supported. He is unable to weight bear and no longer has sufficient strength in his upper body to assist in transfers from chair to bed. Jamie is able to finger feed appropriate food but needs feeding at all other times as he is unable to sustain sufficient energy whilst feeding himself to take in sufficient nutrition. He has trismus after drinking and after brushing. Jamie has no difficulty with breathing. He gets regular coughs and some occasional chest infections but they do not threaten his health at present. Jamie is prescribed drugs to control his epilepsy and any previous attempts to wean him off have been unsuccessful.
