ABSTRACT

Janine Smyth, a new nursing graduate with six months of practice experience as a Registered Nurse on a large surgical unit, has recently moved to a small rural facility. She is a baccalaureate graduate with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice and is challenged by the lack of educational resources available to her. Janine immediately used the computer to seek clinical practice guidelines for the care of children in palliative care and the treatment of pain. She admitted the child, provided care guided by the clinical practice guidelines and engaged the mother and grandmother in the care of the child. In paediatric palliative care, the Association for Children's Palliative Care has produced a critical pathway for the provision of care in palliative care settings. This document identifies aspects of care to be highlighted at particular points in the child's illness, and identifies goals or outcomes of care.
