ABSTRACT

Paediatric palliative care teams come in many different forms and variations; to provide excellent comprehensive care it is essential to have a strong team, since no one professional group can provide the care alone. Teams change and evolve over time, increasing in both capacity and complexity. This will be highlighted throughout this chapter, where authors will share 15 years of experiences gleaned through working within an interdisciplinary team. Team dynamics and considerations affect multiple levels of authors' work in paediatric palliative care. It is essential to take time to choose, build and nurture the team. In order to care well for children with palliative care needs and their families, it is important to have a plan for self-care. Facilitation of the team's group dynamic is often something that gets attention only when problems and conflicts arise. Professional boundaries are easy to cross when you are sharing families' most vulnerable times and spending long periods of time in close proximity.
