ABSTRACT

In 1999, a British paediatric nurse, joined the team to help them develop the services for children. There were many obstacles and challenges to overcome in setting up this new service. This chapter uses a case study of an exceptional young patient to illustrate how people addressed some of these challenges to set up a successful service for children living with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions in Oradea and the surrounding area. It demonstrates people model of care by sharing the traumatic journey of a courageous young girl from diagnosis to her subsequent death. Palliative care is still a relatively new concept in Romania. The recommendation of the Council of Europe expert committee on the organisation of palliative care was formally adopted by the Committee of Ministers on 12 November 2003 as the recommendation Rec 24 "on the organisation of palliative care". The development of paediatric palliative care services can present many challenges.
