ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book supports the development of a range of mainly non-clinical skills related to professional development. It provides a basis for making the most of a number of learning opportunities that occur during training. The book serves as a source of useful information to doctors in the NHS and provides assistance with the development of new skills and capabilities that we know are relevant to professional careers. It is intended to be a useful resource to help people with a particular problem and an opportunity to work through larger sections in order to learn more about specific aspects of their work. The book emerges from an extensive study of the non-clinical learning needs of doctors at all stages in their careers and has been further informed by a series of development programmes for doctors.
