ABSTRACT

The Ankle Brachial Pressure Index compares the blood pressure in the leg arteries with that in the brachial artery using Doppler to detect the fl ow of blood and sphygmomanometer to measure the pressure. Dividing the highest pressure at which the Doppler pulsation was detected in the ankle by the highest brachial artery pressure gives a value of ABPI. Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) is easy to measure and can be measured in a primary care setting by a trained practice nurse or a general practitioner.
