ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the development of a range of mainly non-clinical skills related to professional development. It provides a basis for making the most of a number of learning opportunities that occur during training. The book serves as a source of useful information to doctors in the NHS. It also provides assistance with the development of new skills and capabilities that we know are relevant to professional careers. The General Medical Council’s ‘Good Medical Practice Guidelines’ remind us that a high level of clinical competence is only one aspect of professional medical practice. Personal insight, effective team working, good leadership, teaching others and skill in dealing with patients need to be supported by clear understanding of the complex structures and systems in the modern NHS.
