ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the awareness of a range of aspects for dealing with people at work, resolving conflict, dealing with opposition, acting assertively, dealing with anger, delegation and influencing others, as well as handling stress and helping us to manage our time effectively. It provides some information for developing doctor's skills in leadership and team working, although they cannot learn to lead and influence others just by reading a book – but it can help them if they have some background knowledge. Jointly developed by The AMRC and NHS III, medical leadership competency framework describes the leadership competencies doctors need in order to become more actively involved in the planning, delivery and transformation of health services. Conflict is part of daily life, and arises from patients, relatives, colleagues and other NHS professionals including GP practices and even at home. Negative aspects of conflict are hard to manage.
