ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an outline of current views and attitudes to research in the NHS generally and in training posts and gives doctors an outline of ways that they could undertake research if they feel inclined to do so. Reliable, research-based information is fundamental to the successful implementation of clinical governance. The chapter also provides some general guidelines and insight in to how to carry out research. Engagement in the research fosters characteristics such as logical thought, critical analysis and self-reliance. These are of substantial benefit in clinical practice. Clinical practice can benefit greatly from research carried out by doctors with training in the methods and ethics of medical research. Most doctors who have undertaken periods of research would probably agree that they are better doctors for the experience. The essential purpose of research is to produce some new knowledge.
