ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of competences in medical education, training and practice with a particular focus on the management and leadership competences doctors should attain. It reviews several existing competency frameworks used in practice by the medical and other health professions in both the United Kingdom (UK) and internationally to inform leadership development. Rapid change in the healthcare environment has pressured healthcare organisations and medical professional, regulatory and educational bodies to begin examining more carefully what it means to be a fully competent doctor. One of the implications of integration into curricula is that those responsible for medical education and training will be required to deliver the management and leadership element of the curriculum and assess management and leadership competence in medical students and doctors in training. In the UK, management and leadership has not generally been considered part of the core undergraduate curriculum as the focus is on the clinical skills necessary to become a competent doctor.
