ABSTRACT

On 9 June, Kenneth Clarke made what was described as 'a bullish speech' at the Annual Meeting of the Institute of Health Service Management at Torquay. Dr. Jeremy Lee-Potter, a haematologist from Poole General Hospital and Deputy Chairman of the Consultants Committee was elected unanimously. In June, Mrs Thatcher sent Sir David Wolfson, who had been head of her Political Office from 1979 to 1985, along with Lord Rayner, the Chairman of Marks & Spencers, and Sir Robin Ibbs, to various National Health Service sites to make an assessment as to whether the reforms would work or not. As the Executive of a trade union the British Medical Association Council had to be directly elected by the membership and four of its members were elected in a constituency made up of the entire membership of the organisation.
