ABSTRACT

I ntroduction One of the key management insights that has been gained in the last 2 0 years is the importance of developing 'learning organisations ' . A learning organisation has been defined in many ways . One of the more practical definitions is that 'a learning organisation is an organisation skilled at creating, acquiring and transferring knowledge, and modifying its behaviour to reflect new knowledge and insights ' . 1

The author of this definition went on to argue that learning organisations are skilled in five main activities :

l systematic problem solving 2 experimentation with new approaches 3 learning from their own experience and past history 4 learning from the experience and best practice of others 5 transferring knowledge quickly and efficiently throughout the organisation.
