... in a hot part of the world a long way away, there was a big country where someone caught a very nasty disease (actually, it was meningitis, but who wants to be pedantic in a fairy story?). The people were very poor and couldn’t afford medicines. They certainly couldn’t afford to waste their money recording how many people got ill. The disease was very infectious, and more and more people got ill and many of them died.
