ABSTRACT

In multidisciplinary or trans-organisational teams, resources may have been pulled together from a variety of sources, and there may be a 'turf war' over how much should be contributed by each organisation or interest group. Professionals possess a body of knowledge and skills based on long periods of training. Professionals also share a code of ethics that indicates how patients and clients should be served and the social attitudes that should be accepted. Many multidisciplinary groupings are described as teams when they are in reality nothing of the kind. Multidisciplinarity is more than political correctness, and in world it cannot be avoided. It is often said that multidisciplinary groups need a special type of facilitator. In fact, the principles of leading or facilitating this type of group are no different to those for any other type of group or any other type of problem-solving process.
